On May 17, 2023, the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) met in executive session by video teleconference. PIDB Acting Chair Alissa Starzak led the meeting, which was attended by PIDB members Carter Burwell, Paul-Noel Chretien, Ezra Cohen, Laura DeBonis, Trey Gowdy, Michael Lawrence, Benjamin Powell and John Tierney. PIDB members received a briefing on a pilot program implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for declassification review at the Department of State led by Eric F. Stein, Deputy Assistant Secretary/Global Information Services, and including Jeremiah M. Anderson, Theresa Dixon, and members of their team. Following the discussion of the Department of State’s AI/ML pilot, PIDB member Benjamin Powell reviewed his participation in the public event on over-classification co-sponsored by the American Bar Association Committee on Law and National Security and the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center on May 11, 2023, and the PIDB members planned future meeting agendas.
