On Thursday, January 26, 2023, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. (CST), at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum (the LBJ Library) in Austin, Texas, the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) held its first public meeting of 2023. As a guest of the PIDB, Evan Gottesman, counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI), discussed recent SSCI activities in the area of declassification reform, and the impact of work by the PIDB and the Information Security Oversight Office on Congressional proposals to increase government transparency. Former PIDB Chair Ezra Cohen reviewed the PIDB’s work from 2022, and the PIDB’s Acting Chair Alissa Starzak discussed the PIDB’s priorities for 2023. PIDB member Carter Burwell highlighted topics set for the conference on “America’s Secrets: Classified Information and Our Democracy,” co-sponsored by the PIDB at the LBJ Library today (January 27). The meeting concluded after a questions-and-answers session with the public and media in the audience. A video of the PIDB’s public meeting at the LBJ Library will be available next week on NARA’s YouTube Channel. The agenda of the meeting is now available on the PIDB’s webpage for PIDB Meetings—2023.
