In May, the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) submitted its Annual Report to Congress for calendar year 2024 and subsequently released this report via its public website. The PIDB is required to submit a report under the provisions of section 706(e) of the Public Interest Declassification Act of 2000, as amended (P.L. 106-567).
In 2024, the PIDB conducted several activities related to modernizing the management of classified information. On June 24, the PIDB hosted an engaging public meeting to examine the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence in classification, declassification, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) processes—delving into its capabilities, addressing its challenges, and exploring its potential to fundamentally reshape the release of classified national security information.
The PIDB also hosted eight executive sessions during the year, engaging representatives from the Department of Energy, U.S. Air Force, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and National Archives and Records Administration to discuss technology modernization initiatives within federal agencies. Additionally, PIDB published 12 blog entries on its Transforming Classification platform, inviting public feedback and discussion on various classification and declassification topics.
