On March 15, 2023, the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) met in executive session by video teleconference. PIDB Executive Secretary Mark Bradley opened the virtual meeting, which was led by PIDB Acting Chair Alissa Starzak, and attended by PIDB members Ezra Cohen, Carter Burwell, Alissa Starzak, John Tierney, Paul Noel Chretien, Benjamin Powell, Michael Lawrence, and Trey Gowdy. The meeting featured a briefing and discussion with Henry Sokolski, Executive Director of the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center (NPEC), on the NPEC’s Occasional Paper, “Over-classification: How Bad Is It, What’s the the Fix?”. Following the discussion on over-classification with Mr. Sokolski, PIDB Acting Chair Alissa Starzak and PIDB member Ezra Cohen discussed a meeting with an advisory board to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and Acting Chair Starzak led a discussion of work planning for PIDB recommendations. Acting Chair Starzak, and PIDB members Ezra Cohen and Carter Burwell discussed a request from Columbia University to host a PIDB meeting in early 2024.
